Technical System Lead, Mechanical Engineering

Target start date: Immediately.

Since its founding in 2015, 1X has been at the forefront of developing advanced humanoid robots designed for household use. Our mission is to create an abundant supply of labor via safe, intelligent humanoids.

We strive for excellence in all we do, solving some of the hardest problems in robotics with the world’s most talented individuals. Every part of our robots is designed and produced in-house—from motor coils to AI—reflecting our vertically integrated approach. At 1X, you’ll own real projects, be recognized for your achievements, and rewarded based on merit.

We believe the best work is done when collaborating and therefore require in-person presence in our office locations.

As we scale from research and development to full-scale manufacturing, we are looking for a Technical System Lead in Mechanical Engineering to architect and deliver the mechanical systems that define the performance of our humanoid robot’s joints and body structures. This is a hands-on leadership role that requires both exceptional engineering ability and the vision to guide teams through complex trade-offs and integration challenges. In this role, you will blend personal technical execution with system-level ownership and the development of a high-performing mechanical engineering team.

In This Role, You Will

  • Architect, design, and validate the mechanical systems comprising the robot’s joints, actuators, structural elements, and associated interfaces.

  • Lead and personally contribute to detailed mechanical design, including 3D CAD development, tolerance analysis, materials selection, and structural optimization.

  • Drive system-level trade studies and make key decisions balancing strength, weight, manufacturability, thermal performance, and cost.

  • Guide the integration of mechanical systems with actuators, sensors, electronics, and thermal management components.

  • Oversee prototyping and validation, including test plan development, execution, and design iteration based on results.

  • Establish engineering processes, design standards, and documentation to enable repeatable, high-quality product development.

  • Mentor, develop, and inspire a team of mechanical engineers working on critical subassemblies.

  • Collaborate closely with manufacturing, electrical, and controls engineering teams to deliver robust and scalable solutions.

  • Model hands-on technical excellence and foster a culture of accountability, curiosity, and continuous improvement.
